In October, The Bee profiled Bette Holleman, a Ceres resident who traveled to Uganda to help women there learn to use knitting machines. The garments they create are sold in Europe and the United States to help support the women — many are widows — and their families.

Bette Holleman traveled to Uganda to help others, but says she is the one who became a changed woman.

"My thought when I went there was that I had a lot of problems" the Ceres resident said. "It made me appreciate the fact that I have my husband and I have my children and I have a wonderful life here. I have a lot of blessings. There are lots of people in the world who don't have what we enjoy here. "I'm learning I could make do with much, much less."
